Looking to explore the technical components of live theater? Join us for a two week camp focused on what goes on behind the curtain! Students enrolled in Crew Camp will learn the fundamentals of scenic, prop, and lighting design, as well as stage management, all while gaining hands on experience during our summer production of CHICAGO! Led by beloved veteran theater teacher, Susan Van Buskirk, this camp is a new addition to our 2025 summer season. Crew Camp students will be integrated into our Performance Theater Camp community and will undoubtedly strengthen our production with their skills and talent as they work alongside our professional design team. No prior experience needed. Participants will learn about each discipline of technical theater with the option to focus on a specific track of their choosing.
Susan Van Buskirk is a passionate storyteller and dedicated educator with a lifelong commitment to inspiring others. Throughout her career, she has worked to foster a love of learning, ignite curiosity, and cultivate a passion for excellence in her students. With over 20 years of experience, Susan has earned a reputation as a student-centered educator and as the driving force behind award-winning middle and high school theater programs. She is also the Artistic Director and Founder of the Forbidden Theater Company. Susan has collaborated with industry professionals to create numerous masterclasses and workshops, all aimed at inspiring students and honing their craft. As a certified K-12 theater educator, she has developed and taught curriculum in acting, theater history, and stagecraft, including specialized vocational courses in building, technical theater, and scenic design.
Recently, Susan has returned to SJR and Broadway Theater Workshops, where her children discovered their own lifelong love for theater. As the Associate Producer of the acclaimed theater program at St. Joseph Regional High School, she teaches Communication Arts and proudly led a group of Performing Arts students to compete in their first-ever STANJ (Speech and Theater Association of New Jersey) competition. This spring, she launched the inaugural cohort of the SJR Crew Training Program—an 8-week course designed to train the next generation of production teams.
